Over the past few months I’ve had the opportunity to attend a few gorgeous weddings, and the weddings which really stand out in my mind for creative flair are those which involve a marquee.
Having a marquee at your wedding is a great option if you’re creative and want to start with a blank canvas. A marquee can provide you with complete flexibility when styling your wedding, whether you want to opt for some personal touches or completely theme the whole area! Make sure, however, that you hire an experienced and reputable marquee company such as Pitstop Marquees, as you will need some advice with regards to the practical issus of generators, lighting, flooring, portable toilets and catering equipment!
Here are a few ideas to get you started on decorating your marquee to fulfil its maximum potential…
Think kerb appeal! When selling your house, first impressions count! It’s exactly the same when guests arrive at your marquee, and a stunning entrance sets the scene for what’s to come. Possible styling ideas could include huge floral displays on either side of the entrance, a red carpet (for some show business chic!) or a simple rustic ‘Welcome’ sign for your guests.
Marquees are lofty spaces and simply cry out for hanging decorations and ceiling installations. These don’t have to be expensive but they do need to make a statement otherwise they will look too small and lack impact – generous bunting, giant pom-poms, paper lanterns or even hanging foliage can work wonders to fill space and make a statement.
Avoid the traditional white chair covers, they will simply get lost in such a large, bright space. Wooden chairs work well, either a lighter or darker wood, and they can still be dressed with flowers or ribbons, or casually draped with shawls, for an added touch of styling.
Intimacy and Ambience
A marquee can be a large space to fill, and creating areas within the marquee can add to the overall ambience. When planning your floor layout you might want to consider the best locations for the bar area, dance floor, photo booth, cake table and card and gift table. All of these can be styled according to your theme.
Additional lighting (fairy lights, light curtains, ceiling lights and table/bar lighting) can also create intimacy as the day progresses and daylight begins to fade. Candlelight can give a warm ambience, and twinkling ceiling lights can give a starry night effect… Crystal chandeliers will add a sense of opulence and elegance and naked Edison bulbs will give an altogether more rustic and contemporary feel.
Above all, do your research (Pinterest is great for ideas!) and you’ll soon have some ideas for a fabulously styled marquee!
