As part of our ongoing Best of British series, today we look at the tradition of ‘English Afternoon Tea’, or ‘High Tea’ as it is sometimes known. There is a genuine nostalgic and romantic appeal to celebrating your wedding with afternoon tea, and an English Tea wedding theme is perfect for spring and summer weddings. It can also be a more affordable way to have a relaxed celebration where your guests can mingle casually, spend time together and freely move amongst tables.
In order to achieve your English Tea wedding theme, use white lace or pretty vintage floral tablecloths (as these particularly suit a traditional afternoon tea) along with dainty pastel flowers in teacups, jars or mismatched vases . Mix and match pretty painted vintage floral teacups for a contemporary twist. There are lots of companies across the country who can supply these for you either on a loan basis, or as part of event catering.
Have an attractive presentation of foods set up so that your guests can help themselves. Include savoury and sweet items such as mini quiches, assorted sweet and savoury pastries, bite sized sandwiches (including the traditional salmon and cucumber and cream cheese and cucumber!), scones with a selection of preserves and clotted cream and miniature dainty cupcakes. You can also add brightly coloured platters of freshly sliced fruit.
A traditional afternoon tea could also include several kinds of speciality teas along with a more classic blended tea with wider appeal such as Earl Grey. Iced teas, lemonade and homemade ginger beer can also work particularly well and if you want to include a special alcoholic beverage, champagne or a champagne cocktails work well with the lighter tea menu.
Appropriate wedding favours and invitations in keeping with the afternoon tea theme include small boxes of tea with custom labels, jars of local jams or honey, or even beautifully presented tea bags which can be sent out with your wedding invitations!
Does the idea of an English Tea wedding theme appeal to you, if so what would you serve on your menu?
