I love being Editor of Aspirational Bride, it is a wonderful job and one which I enjoy enormously! One of the many highlights of my job is receiving gorgeous things sent to me to review. I can’t begin to tell you how thrilled I was when this beautiful and stylish book landed on my desk recently!
Today much is made of celebrity and the word ‘icon’ is banded about with alarming regularity. To many people Audrey Hepburn was one of the few true icons, especially in the worlds of fashion and beauty. As you flick through this book you cannot fail to be blown away by her innate beauty and unique sense of style.
Audrey Hepburn In Hats, published by Reel Art Press, shows Hepburn wearing an amazing selection of her most beautiful, stylish and outrageous hats – from legendary designs such as Givenchy, Mr. John, Dior, Cecil Beaton and Balenciaga. The world’s most coveted designers flocked to dress Hepburn, whose look redefined glamour, redefined beauty. Some of the photos are so familiar they are like old friends, others were new and wonderful discoveries.
Hepburn inspired everlasting loyalty from her fans, set global fashion trends and cemented reputations across several industries. Creating a hat for her was to stake your claim in fashion history. At the top of her list of favoured designers was Hubert Givenchy, one of the world’s greatest designers. Audrey became his muse and their professional association and personal friendship lasted a lifetime.
There are so many wonderful images in this book, an endearing favourite is the iconic image of Holly Golightly peering provocatively from beneath the wide saucer brim of her fabulous black Chapeau du Matin, the boa-length hatband representing her unmistakable freedom of spirit.
An entire section dedicated to My Fair Lady and the fabulous Academy Award winning costumes and sculpted hats designed by Sir Cecil Beaton. It features stunning photographs of Audrey Hepburn taken by leading photographers including Dennis Stock, Howell Conant, Terry O’Neill, Bud Fraker and Bob Willoughby, and the book features useful and factual yet unobtrusive accompanying text from fashion writer, June Marsh.
Quintessentially elegant, Hepburn’s status as a global fashion and style icon owes as much to an endless assortment of fabulous clothes and headwear, as it does to her acting. Hepburn and her hats were a match made in heaven (who else could wear such a diverse selection of hats and look amazing in each and every style?!) and for decades her sense of style meant she not only graced the silver screen but the cover of glossy magazines throughout the world.
I loved every page of this book! If you’re a Hepburn fan, love hats, love fashion or all three – this truly is a ‘must have’ book!
